Introduction to this blog...

Sat Nam.

Welcome to the introduction of Notes to My Teacher...Yogi Bhajan.

Yogi Bhajan passed away on October 6th, 2004. He was a Master of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation.

When a Master passes away, there is a gap that needs to be filled, a loss that both challenges us and creates a deeper connection to the teachings.

I remember Yogi Bhajan taught a class in Los Angeles...an unannounced class, he showed up at the yoga studio when a regular class was being taught and started teaching...his beginnings words were “I wanted to see if the people loved the teachings or only the yogi”. Although he knew the value of having a living teacher, he also knew the students must connect deeply to the teachings.

We are fortunate to be living at a time when we can easily record sound and pictures. In the 35 years Yogi Bhajan taught, he was audio or video recorded over 8,000 times. I am very great full to those individuals and organizations that have processed these unedited recordings.

I have been listening and watching the Yogi Bhajan audio and video recordings for my own learning. I want to make certain you don’t miss this way of learning.

What I am going to do is share with you the essence of each class, along with the meditation. Except there is one caught, my intention is that you listen or watch the Yogi Bhajan lecture youself...and learn directly from him. Well, actually there is another caught...more of a request...I would like you to add your commentary...your understanding...your essence of the lecture.

May you explore more deeply the art and science of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation directly with the Master, Yogi Bhajan.

How this blog's postings and comments will work...

We as the bloggers will watch or listen to one of Yogi Bhajan's lectures. We will post our commentary...high lights, insights...something which resonates with us and something which may allow you to...do the same, watch that lecture of Yogi Bhajan.

If our commentary of the lecture inspired you to watch or listen...then do so, and...come back to this blog and post your commentary underneath the original post...or if you were there live...or are doing the meditation...or you can connect the dots of something Yogi Bhajan said in this lecture to...or...

Our goal is 1-4 per lectures per month. As we get more and more commentary on each lecture, we will...

October 30, 1990 Los Angeles, CA

Date: October 30, 1990
Length: 60 minutes
Meditation/Yoga: meditation
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Life is not about good and bad but the experience of life. We normally go for security...even in religion...simple be yourself.

Difficult to paraphrase as he wove this theme for about 10 minutes...how he can be outspoken about religion and yoga...allowing us to go to its essence. As I mention in the introduction to the blog...see and hear for yourself.

He was even more graphic in his explanation as "we are never free of the bottle or the..." How many of us told our children or even ourselves to simple be yourself. We tell them...do this, become that, get this, wait for that...even...I am looking at my notes and know they are correct, yet it seems like words of advice only a Master could say so I won’t say.

Even though the lecture started out with "polite in your face", he ending very heart centered with a unique meditation that has no chanting or special eye focus or breath.

There is likely an official meditation title, let me now simple say...Look at Your Palms and Be Yourself.

Arms are in front of body, elbow bent, arm relaxed, eyes open...look at your palms...you can achieve anything in life...he gave this meditation a name yet it seems more like a technique...mental attitude is your the worlds best palmist...yes, reading the palm and more..the commandment is “read your hands”...concentrate...bring purity to it...he continued to talk us through the meditation and said be careful of the itchiness and move through it.

We ended with hand on heart center, Ardas Bhai playing (a tune that I have not heard in a while) and very heart centered...so much so that I want to watch this again to make certain. Time was about 20 minute for looking at palms and about 5 for hands on heart.

FAQ and Fine Print

1) Where do we get/see/look at/purchase the audio and video lectures? (please also read #2)

There are two main sources for the lectures:

KRI- http://www.kriteachings.org/
Ancient Healing Ways- http://www.a-healing.com/.

In what format, which ones, etc. etc. is in constant change so you will need to visit their sites and call them for details.

I...or rather our local Kundalini Yoga and Sikh Dharma community purchased our years ago. The lectures were recorded and the next week available for sale. Yes, even while Yogi Bhajan was alive we were listening and watching his lectures. Your local Kundalini Yoga or Sikh Dharma community may have done the same. I noticed that both Yoga West in Los Angeles, CA and Vancouver, BC both have a video class.

2) Yogi Bhajan was also a Sikh, what about those lectures?

Yes, he was also known as Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogi ji. Kundalini Yoga and Sikh Dharma are closely connected and intertwined.

A friend suggested that I review lectures that are already on line both yoga and Sikh, I will be getting to that soon, lots going on! SikhNet is another wonderful site for Yogi Bhajan's teachings.

3) I noticed that your explanation of the lecture or meditation is different then the official version?

Your commentary is welcomed, provided you listen or watch the original unedited lecture. Official versions are necessary yet that is not my intention or role.

4) What is your connection to Yogi Bhajan?

My Kundalini Yoga and Meditation practice started in 1974 and my Sikh Dharma practice started in 1978. I have been at it ever since...my personal mantra is "participate, share and contribute."
